Coach Sloth came to our school. His last name is Sloth. He is an author. When he writes a book, it takes about one year. Coach Sloth was in some movies. He was a football player. He wrote the Big Fish book and Sammy's Big Gold Tournament. His books are about Sammy Sloth. He autographed our books. He told us his daughter's and son's names. We made ice cream and gave him some. We gave him a sloth shirt.

November
In November we had election activities and we have Thanksgiving and a feast. Thanksgiving is a holiday. The Pilgrims sailed to a new land on the Mayflower in 1620. Lots of people eat turkey, sometimes ham, and other good food. We made turkeys, Pilgrim hats, and native Americans. We also made Pilgrim books and read them to our book buddies. Thanksgiving is in two days. On Thanksgiving Day and the day after we don't have school. Lots of families get together and you get to see your relatives. Thanksgiving is fun. We are very thankful.

Election
The second graders held an election on Tuesday, November 6, 2012. We voted for either Obama or Romney for president. The term is for four years. Each person in Mrs. Garrett's and Mrs. Riggs' classes had a job. Some people handed out ballots, ribbons, and registrars. Some moms came to help. Kindergarteners, first graders, second graders, third graders, and staff voted. Barak Obama had 277 votes and Mitt Romney had 192 votes.

The Election
You can only vote for one person -- Obama or Romney. You can't vote for both candidates. We will vote in a voting booth. You can only vote one time. When adults vote, they do a lot of reading about the candidates. You have to be 18 or older to vote. Parents will help us make a voting booth. Everybody can vote for who they want. You have to be 35 years or older to be a president. You have to be a US citizen. Every 4 years you can vote for president of the United States. Don't make fun of the other person's candidate. Please get out and VOTE! You vote for the president and vice president. Every president has a vice president.

Give Me Five
This is a way for us to quiet down right away. The five means: Lips are zipped. Legs are crossed. Eyes are watching. Ears are listening. Hands are still. Mrs. Stickler, the guidance counselor, taught us this. We have done well. We're practicing this at school and at home and in the gym with all the other grades. We practice it in Mrs. Riggs' room. It's good to practice and the more we practice, the better we get. If we are too loud, the teacher says, "Give me 5." It will last a whole school year. When we get older, we can help others learn this.

Some of us go to Mrs. Garrett's room for reading. Some of us stay in our homeroom for reading. We read lots of different books. We have spelling in reading. Chapter books are for some of us. Some books have big and hard words. Sometimes we get stumped on some words. We're learning our consonants and vowels. Mrs. Riggs' group used their imagination for Ats and Hats. The more you read, the more you know and the smarter you get. We're talking about reading genres.

Science
We have been learning about plants. We have learned the parts of a plant--roots, stem, leaves, flower, and seed. We talked about how seeds can move. Animals can help the seeds move. When it rains, it gives the soil water. The leaves help the water get into the flower and other parts. Flowers can be different colors. Mrs. Garrett's class comes over for science and sometimes we go to her room. Yesterday we went on a leaf walk. We are making a leaf rubbing.
